Thermodynamics of Computation

چکیده
It is generally accepted, following Landauer and Bennett, that the process of measurement involves no minimum entropy cost, but the erasure of information in resetting the memory register of a computer to zero requires dissipating heat into the environment. This thesis has been challenged recently in a two-part article by Earman and Norton. I review some relevant observations in the thermodynamics of computation and argue that Earman and Norton are mistaken: there is in principle no entropy cost to the acquisition of information, but the destruction of information does involve an irreducible entropy

The End of the Thermodynamics of Computation : A No Go Result
The thermodynamics of computation assumes that computational processes at the molecular level can be brought arbitrarily close to thermodynamical reversibility; and that thermodynamic entropy creation is unavoidable only in data erasure or the merging of computational paths, in accord with Landauer’s principle. The no go result shows that fluctuations preclude completion of thermodynamically re...

We suggest that the framework of quantum information theory, which has been developing rapidly in recent years due to intense activity in quantum computation and quantum communication, is a reasonable starting point to study non-equilibrium quantum statistical phenomena. As an application, we discuss the non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics of black hole formation and evaporation. c © 1999 El...
متن کاملEntropy Generation in Computation and the Second Law of Thermodynamics
Landauer discussed the minimum energy necessary for computation and stated that erasure of information is accompanied by heat generation to the amount of kT ln 2/bit. Modifying the above statement, we claim that erasure of information is accompanied by entropy generation k ln 2/bit. Some new concepts will be introduced in the field of thermodynamics that are implicitly included in our statement...
متن کاملBrownian Computation Is Thermodynamically Irreversible
The thermodynamics of computation applies ideas from thermal and statistical physics to physical devices implementing computations. Its major focus has been to characterize the principled limits to thermal dissipation in these devices. The best case of no dissipation arises when we use processes that create no thermodynamic entropy. They are thermodynamically reversible processes in which all d...
متن کاملfirst principle computation of the low temperature thermodynamics of glasses
We propose a first principle computation of the equilibrium thermodynamics of simple fragile glasses starting from the two body interatomic potential. A replica formulation translates this problem into that of a gas of interacting molecules, each molecule being built of m atoms, and having a gyration radius (related to the cage size) which vanishes at zero temperature. We use a small cage expan...
